Greetings from Anthony Twig Wheeler who will be facilitating our Communicating with Traumatize People workshop,

Soon you, I and many others will be meeting in Tokyo to spend a weekend investigating the special qualities that are necessary to successfully communicated with people negotiating traumatic stress.

As you and I both appreciate. Chronic stress, traumatic stress, even simple sense of distress alters people’s behavior, focus and attention. These challenging influences on people’s well-being also challenges their ability to: be successful with their efforts, hear options and choose the better ones, respond appropriately to novel situations and more.

For us helping professionals who want to help our clients the best we can, we need to adjust our requests on our clients so that they can be successful with what we ask of them.

This includes everything from how we ask clients to reflect on positive or resourcing experiences - which can be challenging for people suffering trauma - to how fast or slow we speak when helping different kinds of people through different kinds of discomforts.

To be successful we’ll need to do more in this workshop than just talk about these things. We’ll do that of course, develop a rationale and guidelines for our communications with troubled clients. But we’ll also need to practice these ideas. We’ll need to feel in ourselves what it is like when we adjust our communications so that our clients can make the best use of them.

For this reason, our weekend together will have both lecture and presentation material included but also plenty of discussion, participation, fun practice sessions and explorations that will allow us to develop a wide range of responses, tones, phrases and appropriately scaled encouragement for our clients to receive our best help.

I am looking forward to our time together and am anticipating a very thoughtful, fun and helpful workshop.

Warmly,

Anthony Twig Wheeler
